Without copy editing, it is likely your book will contain a number of spelling, punctuation or grammatical errors. It is probably unfair of readers to judge an excellent book badly because of the odd typo. However they do.

Copy editing is the process of going through the book looking for these sorts of issues and fixing them. The copy editor is not at all interested in the story itself or your flowing prose or descriptive excellence. They are just looking for things like sentences without verbs, misuse of tenses, commas in the wrong place and words misspelled.

You may think your spell checker will pick up all such errors, but just see the following sentence, that has no spelling errors as far as my computer is concerned.

“Ewe may think yaw spell chequer will pick up awl such errors, but just sea the following sentence, that has know spelling errors as far as my computer is concerned.”

Or this one that has no verb but was not picked up by my automatic grammar checker

The sad and lonely people going to the bank every Friday to collect their subsistence pay.”
